An eyedropper is an essential tool for any web developer. If you spot a color, which you can use in your project, you can extract it instantly with an eyedropper tool. Websites are a good source of colors. If you wish to extract them without launching a separate application, you can use ColorZilla. It places an eyedropper tool on your web browser, which you can use at any time, on any website.

ColorZilla is an add-on for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. The Firefox and Chrome versions can be downloaded separately. If you know how to install a web browser extension, you will not have any difficulties with ColorZilla. It is offered free of charge and it can be used on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux platforms.

After installing ColorZilla on your preferred browser, you will find an eyedropper option on its interface. You just need to select this tool, hover with the mouse cursor over a color and click to capture it. While hovering, you can preview the targeted color and its corresponding HTML code. Once you capture a color, its code will be copied to the clipboard automatically.

Additional options can be found in a pop-up menu. You can bring up a color picker and a palette browser on a tabbed window. It is also possible to analyze DOM colors on a webpage. The results are listed in the lower region of the browser's interface. You can save the colors in a palette or various web services, like Google Bookmarks, Stumbleupon and others.

ColorZilla gives you access to a CSS gradient generator as well. Selecting this option will take you to a page, on the developer's website, on which you may customize a gradient. The CSS code is generated automatically, in a text box, while adjusting the gradient.

Pros

You can capture any color on your web browser, without launching separate applications. A captured color's HTML code is copied automatically to the clipboard. You can also inspect the colors on a web page and generate high quality gradients.

Cons

The add-on is available only for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. With ColorZilla, you can acquire any color you need instantly, without leaving your web browser.
